Steel Tanks: A standard steel forklift propane tank typically has an empty tare weight of around 35 pounds (15.9 kg).

Aluminum Tanks: Aluminum tanks are lighter, with an empty tare weight of about 24 pounds (10.9 kg). This lighter weight makes them easier for operators to handle and change out, which can be a significant factor in a busy warehouse environment.


Weight of Propane

The weight of the propane itself is the second component of the total weight. The most common forklift tanks are designed to hold 33.5 pounds of liquid propane, which is approximately 7.8 gallons. The weight of propane can vary slightly with temperature, but 4.2 pounds per gallon is a commonly used standard for calculation.

Calculating the Full Tank Weight

To find the total weight of a full forklift propane tank, you add the tare weight of the tank to the weight of the propane it holds.

Full Steel Tank:

35 lbs (empty tank)+33.5 lbs (propane)=68.5 lbs

In practice, a full steel tank typically weighs around 69 pounds.

Full Aluminum Tank:

24 lbs (empty tank)+33.5 lbs (propane)=57.5 lbs

A full aluminum tank typically weighs around 56 to 57 pounds.

Other Tank Sizes

While the 33.5-pound (8-gallon) tank is the most prevalent for forklifts, some larger forklifts may use 43.5-pound capacity tanks. These larger tanks are heavier and are used for bigger engines that require more fuel. The weight of a full 43.5-pound steel tank can be around 80 pounds.


Why the Weight Matters

The weight of a forklift's propane tank is a critical factor for several reasons:

Safety: Propane tanks are heavy and can be a significant ergonomic hazard. The lighter weight of aluminum tanks can reduce the risk of strains and injuries for operators who frequently change tanks. Proper lifting techniques and equipment, such as propane tank dollies, are essential regardless of the tank's material.

Performance: The weight of the tank affects the forklift's overall balance and capacity. Forklifts are designed to carry a specific load and the tank's weight is part of the counter-balance system.

Fuel Monitoring: The most accurate way to check how much propane is left in a tank is by weighing it. Operators can use the tare weight stamped on the tank to calculate the remaining fuel. If the total weight is, for example, 45 pounds, and the tare weight is 24 pounds, there are 21 pounds of propane remaining. This method is more reliable than gauges, which are often less precise.
